While tots may lack the strict health and safety standards that a larger school may have if you are looking for a school that’s fun and feels like one big happy family I would recommend this school for you.
When walking in the east village you could walk by Tenth Street Tots and not even notice the wonderful childcare setting you are walking by. The school is set in a quaint brownstone and holds about 15 children. In this art inspired culturally mixed area Tots fits right in with its blend of children and parents.
It truly is a school of the community. Parents are actively involved with the dedicated team who use theme inspired curriculum to teach children on an every day basis. There are three teachers on staff including the Director who is the only teacher certified. Tots range in ages from 2-4 with a strong focus on milestones and socialization as important skills for their children.
Tots also utilizes the community by bringing in performers, going to the park and sprinklers in the neighborhood, and going on many field trips throughout the city. Snack is provided but parents provide lunch which is prepared for the children by the teacher. The teachers clean up after the children and do a major cleaning at the end of each day. Throughout the day diapers are changed and potty training is encouraged though there is no set schedule for these things.
Children bring in blankets and crib sheets and sleep on cots provided by the school. In terms of safety, the door is kept locked and teachers have to let you in. Other than that there are no clear safety precautions on site. While tots may lack the strict health and safety standards that a larger school may have if you are looking for a school that’s fun and feels like one big happy family I would recommend this school for you.

TENTH STREET KENNEL is more like it… The description at the top bears no resemblence to the lazy, hands-off reality of the place!
That was our experience there last year. Very minimal leadership of the kids in activities… In the mornings like a coffeehouse for stray parents… Teachers and assistants were very unattentive to children. No evidence of them actually reading any books to kids… No apparent pre-academic learning going on, as compared with another preschool we had attended. All in all, we thought the place was a rip-off… A KENNEL to dump one’s kid in during the working hours!

Friendly staff, clean and safe setting. Although it may be on the small size, the other factors make up for it. Kids here get more attention from the helpful and educated staff. Location is accessable via all methods of transportation.

i just had a terrible experience trying to enroll my son at tenth street tots. i invested alot of time getting my son ready whom is soon to be 3 to start at the school and spent alot of time with the director discussing the expectations at the school, our expectations and my sons needs whom is delayed in expressive speech. she kept saying, “i never had a child without any words” i should have walked away then but i didn’t as i really wanted my son to be in a school environment. after his first day which lasted for all of 3hrs the director calls me up and tells me “this is not going to work out” !!! your son is not ready for school, he is very capable but until you are ready he will not be ready. she couldn’t come up with any specific examples??? she was convinced it wasn’t going to work. fine with us as anybody whom makes a judgement call that quickly certainly isn’t right for us either. i had had my doubts while visited the school, thinking she was really loud speaking over the kids in a somewhat condescending manner and when i left after my sons 1st day i felt really disappointed and sad not knowing for what reason exactly, however i was willing to try the next day again. as she couldn’t give me any examples, clearly she wasn’t comfortable handling my son nor me but couldn’t admit that. she expressed the need to have all children follow the rules and curriculum….they are 3… i have to give her credit for being perceptive enough to say i wasn’t ready to let go of my son, which in part was true…i wasn’t ready to let go of him into her care and luckily she exposed her personality right away in what could have been a outdrawn difficult situation to deal with. lesson learned, ALWAYS follow your instincts as a parent!!!
