My son went there from 6mth to 14mth in 2005.
Infant room:
Good points – No shoes allowed. 1:4 ratio, with additional help
Bad points
- TOO cramped / very small room for 8 babies and 2 teachers. THere are 8 cribs next to each other, you cannot easily take a crying baby out of the crib without moving other cribs.
- staff turnover
- son was sick ALL the time
- They moved my son to the toddler room before he could walk to make room for other babies coming to the center.
Toddler room:
- NO windows
- TOTAL CHAOS
- 1 room with 18, 1-2.5 year olds.
- My son was BITTEN by another kid
- I saw my son (who was not walking at 12 mth) get run over by another kid (about 2 year old)who was running…this is when I dropped him off and NONE of the teachers noticed.
- I showed up at lunch time and was horrified to see that 1-2 year olds are expected to feed themselves and if they couldn’t, they just went hungry cause there was not enough staff to feed all the kids. ANd there is a strict time schedule…so when lunch time is done, you go to sleep even if you are not done with your lunch. I fed my son that day, and he was the LAST one left eating lunch…everybody else was put down to nap. Some kids just made a mess of their lunch and did not eat it.
- I also saw a child eat a cheerio off the floor that belonged to another kid.
- My son had a fever and NOBODY even noticed or called me at work to pick him up. He looked horrible and when I picked him up, he was left in the high chair to feed himself his snack while he was burning up and just miserable. I was so furious, that was the last day he went there. When I told the director, instead of saying Sorry, she just said, some kids are hard to tell when they are sick. If you just looked at my son, you could tell he was sick and miserable…..and they did not even call me !!
After changing daycare centers, he was hardly sick. Rhymes and Reasons is a much better daycare in Teaneck for a similar price.
- One more thing, their playgroud in in the parking lot with NO shade next to the big STINKY garbage dumpster.
Blocks and Bridges is a horrible place for toddlers.

Some of the teachers here were really questionable. My child hated going here!

Not only was the Director rude to me when I inquired about sending my child there, the center is cramped. The play space is tiny and is actually located outside in a back alley next to the back entrance of a food market. The play tous outside are worn and few. I can’t even understand how more than two children could fit out there to play… Overall terrible

I AM ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED AT WHAT I AM READING HERE. The person or people who wrote really bad about blocks and bridges, obviously has a personal grudge. As far as the school curriculum, it is very well structured and fun for the children from infant room to pre-k room. In the pre-k room, the children learn math at the age of 4. They know all their colors and shapes. Dr Brightwell, the director, makes it her number one priority as far as the childrens health and safety go. Dr. Brightwell trains and chooses the best team of teachers who treat the children as one of their own. The teacher/ child ratio is always in tact. Infant room-4 to 1, the pre-toddler room-4 to 1, the Toddler room-5 to 1, the pre-school room, 6 to 1, and the pre-k room-8 to 1. I have a son who attends BLOCKS AND BRIDGES, and neither me nor him could be happier there. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS CENTER FOR ANYONE. Feel free to contact the center and see what I am telling you for yourselves. The Pre-school teacher, Mrs. B, is a sweetheart and also Dr. Brightwell’s assistant.

Clearly, several of the 53 families who were terminated from Blocks & Bridges between 2002-2007 were not pleased with my decision to cancel their child’s enrollment because of the parent (s) disrespectful and unacceptable treatment towards my teachers.
Blocks & Bridges is a wonderful place for all children. As an Educational Psychologist and center owner for 19 years, I DO NOT allow parents (usually the moms) to run my center. Sadly, I now understand why so many of our children are in such emotional distress…. their families are controlled by women (even with a father in the home) who suffer from personality disorders not yet diagnosed by a mental health professional.

I visited close to 10 daycares before deciding to enroll my baby to Blocks and Bridges. I choose Blocks and Bridges because of the following reasons:
• Director has a PhD
• The space is larger than any daycares I visited
• The children appeared happy
My son, who is very shy and has a really bad stranger anxiety, is very happy at the center. The teachers are very nice and tell me how he was during the day when I pick him up.
I strongly recommend Blocks and Bridges to anyone!
