I’ve let my 5.5 months daughter enter to this leaning center, she got sick for consecutive 5 weeks.
    reason:
    1. they admit all the toddlers and the babies in the same room early morning, the toddler walking and playing around in the babies room, later on, my baby will start crawling to where the toddlers walking earlier on the carpet.
    – DIRTY
    2. they let the babies go out door during winter, they claim babies need to go outdoor where the temp is greater than 32F and less than 90F. no exemptions.
    – cannot request my baby not to go outdoor when it is too windy.

    SMALL and DIRTY.
How can they have the babies and toddler all in the same room. How can they allow babies to get outside like other younger kids? their excuse is when all the teachers are outside, the babies need to be out as well. the babies need to be out twice a day even it is winter or a little bit rain outside. I ask to put sunscreen during hot summer days, they claim they have trees outside, the baby can be in shades, no need of sunscreen.

I worked at this daycare center as an assistant teacher for a while and I would not recommend this facility. Now I’m a mother of two and would never consider bringing my children there. For one, most of the teachers at the time I worked there were without certification or any appropriate degree, and some of them did not even have a proper approach to children, which is probably why I witnessed a 4-year old being kicked and babies being left to cry themselves to sleep. The little ones were changed only couple of times per day and one of them was right before they were picked up, to make a good impression on the parent. In general, during pick-up time everything had to look perfect for the parents. Also, even in the biggest cold they would take the children out, which I personally wouldn’t like done with my own children.
In addition, I witnessed several occasions of children being hurt on the playground – these incidents were carefully hidden from the parents.
Last but not least, teachers did not make sure that all children get sufficient quantity of food at feeding time. The 2-3 year olds were left to feed themselves without the necessary supervision & encouragement that some children need at that age to form better nutrition habits.
My consideration of writing this review is not to be malicious in any way, but simply to inform parents like me who want the best for their children, that this place stays far from the word “best”….I hope the editors of this website will not abstain from publishing my review, especially if they consider the website a place for free expression and truthful opinions.

My two-year old daughter used to attend this daycare. In the beginning I was happy to have found this place. But she hadn’t been there even 2 months when one of the assistant teachers informed me she saw my child kicked by one of the teachers. She advised me to take my child to another facility as my child was already branded as the “naughty” one and was obviously disciplined without being encouraged much. I haven’t seen any of this of course, and I had a hard time believing it at first, because the owners and teachers always appeared extremely courteous. In fact they went out of their way to answer all my questions and concerns, whether I phoned or went personally to see them.
But then I figured if a person working there had enough guts to call me, perhaps risking to lose their job, then I should take it seriously. I did move my child to another center and now she is doing very good there.
As I said this is second-hand information, but it seems to me that the people in this place blind you with excessive courtesy, perhaps to make up for their deficiency and incompetence.

I just wrote another review of this school – I am the anonymous one who used to work here. I am writing a second review because something strange caught my attention. Any person with some intelligence will notice that there are at least 4-5 reviews here that appear fake. Notice that there are about 4 reviews that are all written on or around August 24, all are 5 stars, all talk in the same broken English and all mention a four-year old son who is very happy at the center. Also they are very general and have too much praise without providing a single detail about the environment, curriculum, teachers… They are even written in the same words and sentences. And to top it all, one is written by “Shining Star Learning Center”… I think all of them are written by the owners whom I personally know – and they would do anything to increase their ratings. They are both Russian and speak the same broken English as these reviews…. So please, parents, try to make your own judgment about which reviews published here represent a true picture about this place, and which cannot be trusted…

this center is … I never had a child who went to this center, but when I was looking for a place for my baby, a neighbor told me what ever i do don’t go to this one. Her child went there. Her baby was injured by rolling off a changing table. They neglected to tell her what happened to her son. The next day he had a big bruise on the back of his head. A head injury to the head should require medical attention. She later found out about the accident from a worker who saw this and was told not to tell! This made me sick to my stomach. I prefer to be a stay at home mom than take a chance with my baby’s life.

I looked at this center when I was considering a switch from my old center. Here are a few things I noticed at my visit. First, the center was not secure. I walked into the wrong side at first, with the older children. I was there for several minutes in plain sight before any one noticed me. Two children walked right past me and could have been easily directed out of the center without anyone seeing. While I was standing there I witnessed several children screaming and crying. I understand that sometimes when one starts they all join in. However, no one seemed to be doing anything to comfort them and one child was being reprimanded for crying. When I was finally directed to the right side I found another unsecured door. We had to walk through the infant area to get to the toddler area space. As it was January I stopped to take off my shoes. The director looked at me as though I was some kind of freak for not wanting to track slush through the space where babies were crawling. There was a noticable lack of art work by the children. The walls were bare which allowed me to see how badly they needed to be painted. The toys were old and dirty. Some seemed to be choking hazzards. I looked around for about 5 minutes, which was sufficent because there didn’t seem to be much to look at. I would have explored a little more but the director ended my tour and brought me to the office for the hard sell. I felt like she was trying to sell me a time share. She went into great length about their accounting practices and said more than one that the account was near by and uses a computer. She didn’t have much to say about the food served other that it was catered. Needless to say I didn’t choose Shining Star.

this center is … Wow. I read this and wondered if it was for a different center than where I have sent my kids for the past 7 years. We started here with my first child and loved it. We originally planned to send him there for a year and then get a nanny. The teachers were so warm and my son loved it so much so we kept him there until grammar school. Our second child is there now and frankly it would be much easier for us to send him to preschool closer to our home but we still schlep out to skokie every day to school. Yes, the center is a bit dated but my kids are happy and loved which is far more important to me.
We pick up our son at varying time during the day and have never witnessed anything weird.
Our eldest son was extremely well prepared for kindergarten and the staff turnover is very low. The staff has been nothing but honest about injuries both major and minor. My youngest is a terrible klutz and spends his fair share of time at the dr/ER (mostly for injuries at home). The one time he was hurt at school – we received a phone call right away and a detailed report of what had occurred. It was an unavoidable accident which only could have been prevented if they kept him in a padded room all day :) .

I have sent my 3 year old here since she was 6 weeks old. I LOVE Shining Star. My child has been incredibly well-cared for and instructed here. I LOVE the teachers and my daughter loves them, too. I am heartbroken that someone is putting this negative information about this exceptional childcare center with these comments above. The owner of this center is exceptional, kind and committed to the children. There is rare, rare teacher or child turnover here because the parents and the kids and teachers are so happy. This consistency of caregivers is important for babies and children–they need to see consistency in their instructors. This person references that the response comments have been posted in broken English–there are many non-English speaking parents who take their kids here. I drive my daughter 45 minutes a day to get here when there are plenty of nearby childcare centers–I am so committed to them. The “taking children out in cold weather” comment is simply not true–they don’t let kids out in the winter in case kids do not have proper dress. The kids do start out in the same room, but the babies are kept in the center portion of the room and not in an area near the big kids. It is very clean but not fancy–they clean the carpets and floors regularly. The comment about a child being hurt or kicked by an instructor is not possible. There are always other teachers within view. The owner and the teachers are the best there are–I am devastated this special childcare center is getting negative reviews. I have sent my daughter here for 3 1/2 years and consider the owner and the teachers my daughter’s family.

My children have attended The Shining Star School in Skokie. One of them graduated from there last year and went on to public school well ahead of other children in his class. I would love to thank all the teachers and management team for providing a warm and loving environment. My children loved going to school every day and what they have learned is unbelievable! The school is always very helpful and accommodating to my family’s needs.

My 2 year-old son has been going to Shining Star since he was 8 weeks old. The staff is warm, caring, sincere, knowledgeable and properly trained. My son has great friendships there with the other kids, a great vocabulary (which attribute in part to the wonderful Shining Star staff), and he speaks fondly of his teachers. As much as a 2 year-old can, he tells me about his day and it always sounds like he’s had a great time.
The staff is open and honest. On the rare occasion that I’ve had a concern, they have heard me and responded responsibly and with sincerity.
I think it’s wonderful that they take the kids outside. They are concerned with the children’s well-being and always ensure that they are properly dressed.
In response to another reviewers comments – it is inevitable that kids in daycare will get sick pretty frequently. Any pediatrician will tell you that this is normal and to be expected. This has nothing to do with Shining Star’s level of cleanliness – it’s just something parents have to deal with when their kids are first going into daycare. For kids that don’t go to daycare, they just go through the same round of sicknesses when they enter kindergarten.
Shining Star is a wonderful place. Not particularly fancy from the outside, but inside you will find warm, caring teachers and a group of really happy kids.

this center is …very good. The staff has very little turnover. In fact I am struggling to think who the assistant who posted above IS as other than an older care giver leaving for health reasons I cannot recall anyone leaving in the six years we have been sending our kids there. And very little turnover with the kids either, which speaks volumes.

I have been very happy with this place. It is a little rundown, not super fancy, but always clean. And the kids do lots of projects, can attend dance, karate, and gymnastics classes, and go on field trips in the summer.

And yes many Russian families send their kids there so I agree with one of the posts above that that explains the broken English.

My 2.5 yr old has been attending this day care since he was 3 months old. I researched at least 10 daycares before selecting Shining Star. First and foremost, my son loves his teachers, and tells me everyday, that he wants to see them. He runs to them in the morning when he first arrives. Second, we are bilingual and the russian speaking staff makes sure they talk to him in that language, as requested by me, resulting in him understanding and speaking in Russian and English! What a plus! Next, he has developed very rapidly with his motor skills, language skills, emotional, physical.. you name it. Yes, he was sick a lot the first year he attended, until he was about 1.5 yrs old, then it just stopped. This will happen with any daycare initially. I feel that Shining Star is my son’s second family. I am so blessed to have them in our lives. I love the fact that they take the kids outside a lot, kids need fresh oxygen to breathe and this is very helpful in both, cold and hot weather, so long as they are dressed. I have seen parents bring in their babies in 15 degree weather, wearing nothing on their feet, but ankle sox. If this is your parenting style, then no, your child is not ready for the outside climate in the winter. It is still the parents’ responsibility that their child is prepared for daycare, making sure you supply them with all necessities. My son has many friends in Shining Star, the kids there are wonderful. The same teachers have been there for the past 2.5 years! Stability is so important. I hope you realize that there is a lot of competition for daycares, and many people on here just post negative comments to sabotage their competition. Good luck and I hope you consider this wonderful home-away-from home.

We have sent our daughter to Shining Star since she was eight months old and she will continue there until she starts Kindergarten. The staff is like extended family to our daughter. They are kind, knowledgeable, and caring. The facility is clean and the curriculum is perfect for our four-year-old. She learns new things every day.

Through our whole experience, the owners and staff have been accommodating and helpful. Our daughter had to have an eye patched for a few months, and they did this right on schedule. We stopped in several times at the beginning to check on this so we know it happened. Recently, our daughter had a string of bad behavior. With help from her teacher, we got a report on her behavior every day and were able to reward her at home when she had “thumbs up” days.

For babies up to one year, we get a daily sheet with all diaper changes and feedings, so the one review that says they don’t change the babies enough seems to be misinformed. Our daughter was changed very regularly.

And I’m really not sure about the sunscreen comment. Since we’ve started there, we’ve been required to supply sunscreen for our daughter and they apply it when the kids go outside.

Our daughter has blossomed at this center. She has overcome her shyness and is open to meeting new people and learning new things. We highly recommend Shining Star and if have more children, they will attend as well.

I noticed a swift change in my child’s verbal and social skills. We kept our child there for over a yr until our careers forced us to relocate. We’re SAD to go “Shining Star” they were GREAT in helping our child in that early developmental stage and took great of our kid. We’re THOROULY satisfied with our time there and would reccomend it to anyone!

  28. happy doctor mom says:

My daughter has been attending Shining Star since she was 4 months and we have been so happy with the daycare/school. I don’t know why there have been negative reviews posted (most of them several years ago), but my experience with them not only as a mother, but as a pediatrician and a child psychiatrist has been extremely positive. As a children’s physician, I believe the qualities that are most important in a good daycare and nursery school are : 1) safety; 2) quality of the staff; and 3) a child’s experience for personal growth and development.

Regarding safety, I feel extremely secure with Shining Star. The school has two buildings separated by a shaded, fenced-in play area, one building is for infants/toddlers, and the other for older children. There is only one entrance/exit for each building, through an extremely secure and heavy door in the back that is noisy upon opening. You enter the door and walk through a hallway by the office window. The hallway leads to a large room that is divided by short walls for the different age groups. The room is large enough for the children to be active, but not so large that the staff can’t keep an eye on all of them. The rooms are well-worn, but clean. There is a chance for kids to bump into each other, but that can happen on any playground or at any school. Because the room is square, there are no blind spots or corners where the children can go unsupervised. In my daughter’s room, there are crawlers, walkers, and runners. Personally, I am okay with this because I believe that an important social skill for children is to not only be exposed to differently aged peers, but different developmental levels of motor, language, and cognitive skills. I’ve observed the children being active, but also being redirected appropriately by staff whenever they went too near a crawler. I did not witness any times when a child could even be potentially physically harmed by a staff member. Children will go outside twice a day only when the weather is not too cold or too hot. They apply sunscreen in the summer if they go outside regardless of the weather, and make sure that the children are in the shade when playing or walking around the neighborhood.

The staff is excellent. The teacher/child ratio is ideal, and the staff has had very little turnover in the last 10 years. I’ve seen daycare centers where their staff have degrees in early education, but little or no hands-on experience. One can study from a book and do supervised internships, but studying and doing are two very different things, and in my opinion, just having a degree does not necessarily equate with having quality staff. I have been most impressed with the teachers – not only do they genuinely love their jobs (hence the low turnover) and the children, but they KNOW each child’s temperament and adjusts accordingly. For example, my daughter is feisty, loud, and loves toys that play music. Another child is more quiet and reserved. All the staff members know the individual children, and will modify their individual teaching styles to fit that of the child’s temperament. A larger, more impersonal daycare would not do this.

Finally, because the staff takes such an interest in the children, they naturally foster their personal intellectual curiosity and growth. They encourage each child to develop, but at their own pace. For example, the staff may point out to me another child in the room and talk about his/her strengths and skills – “this is _name_ – she just learned her abc’s yesterday and she loves to color animals…right now we’re learning all the different names.”

Because Shining Star is a smaller daycare/school, it feels like an extension of a family. The multicultural and diverse staff have become “aunties” to my daughter, and her face lights up everyday when she sees them. The school is not a shiny, large, modern building with a large number of young inexperienced staff who isolate children to different rooms according to age. It is a family environment, one that is older, well-worn, well-loved, and comfortable. I feel so lucky to have found them, and I wouldn’t want my daughter anywhere else.

As a longtime parent of children who attend shining star, I am struggling to understand why a group of people continue to slander shining star. A group of parents of current and former students regularly meet up and I have never heard very many negative comments from them at all. My children receive a fantastic education/social experience there. The staff and owners are like family and do a wonderful job. I received regular reports on changings and unless they are throwing out unused diapers, my children were changed far more than 3 times a day. Also my kids never looked like they were malnourished and are good eater, so I find the claims that kids are not getting food to be utterly ridiculous.

While I am sure there are tons of awful places out there- this absolutely is not one of them. It is really easy to hide under an assumed name, claim you were a former teacher ( the staff turnover is so low that the details and timing of the post does not fit any of the teachers who left) or the use the umbrella of anonymous on the Internet and make wild accusations. At the end of the day, it is the parents who are willing to be identified (all of the recent posters) who word you should take on what really goes on here.
